Darkslayers over Vantage

Darkslayers – Titan – D7
Vantage – Collective – A7

In this consolation match, the venerably classy Darkslayers met Vantage, in what was to be the newly coherent squad’s last game. While, for once, this reporter did in fact write down the names of the people who got the flags, they will not be included, because that is boring, nevertheless DS emerged with 4 flags, and Vantage 3.

For what tended to be a fairly balanced game, it was reasonably exciting, with much base switching and lag flagging and whatnot.

Both squads used fairly conventional setups for both offense and defense, and in the early going, the defenses held stong, with neither team making headway towards flags.

However things opened up a little when Vantage captain Hans with skill and lag in equal parts started making daring Deathboard rushes into D7. This forced the Darkslayer’s defence to follow Hans, and allowed the Vantage offence to push a little deeper with Max the capable SL marshalling the forces well, sometimes sending waves of 6 or 7 attackers into the DS base, before being pushed out or flanked.

On the other side of the coin Darkslayers was consistently sending a 5 man offense, headed by XXXXX, with help from Captain Ax, who despite being quite laggy, was still the epitome of an efficient SL. Because Vantage was sending such varied numbers to offense, sometimes Darkslayers met a formidable wall of Vantage defenders, and sometimes those defenders were absent. When that was the case, DS rolled through A7, with Vantage relying on flanks to maintain their base.

Vantage did the first real damage, a few minutes in, sending in a particularly effective wave, which did good damage, allowing Hans to escape with a flag, and forced DS into a mini-turtle while Hed (possibly the greatest engineer the game has ever seen…) scrambled to rebuild turrets. Vantage couldn’t capitalize, and the ebb of the game returned to normal.

Shortly thereafter, Hans burst onto the scene in D7 once more, and with a solid infantry wall repulsing for him, was summoned home to A7 by the Vantage medic NewJack. However, DS was simultaneously pushing deep into A7, and in the confusion Hans seemed to get lost, and trapped on the wrong side of the attacking Darkslayers, making him an easy target, and allowing DS to escape home.

After that, there was some flagging on both sides, but no one was able to escape until DS attacked while Vantage was swinging, and was able to kill NewJack and the defenders before anyone could react. However, Vantage showed some maturity, and launched a coherent and very effective attack on D7, and a stray grenade from Max, allowed Vantage to escape to H4, giving them new life.

The H4 base was eventually rushed by the solid DS offense, but once again, Vantage pushed through D7, this time escaping back to A7, where a base was re-established. After some give and take, a few flag grabs by Daventry for DS, and Hans for Vantage, with essentially no progress either way. The break came when NJ got haywired through the wall in A7, allowing DS to push deep into A7, and eliminate the entiriety of the defenders, leaving only a few turrets between them and the flags. With little ceremony, they dispatched the turrets, and returned to D7 with all flags.

Vantage mounted yet another rush, and was able to abort when Edge Dante was able to kill Daventry. This was however to be their last abort, despite a valiant effort from NewJack; who was able to grab the flags, but unable to hold them for long enough to abort the victory timer. DS was able to hold off Vantage to take the win.

Darkslayers takes the victory in 42 minutes.

Sorry this review is so long, I think it will be my last one. Kudos to Hans for being such an integral part of the community, and I wish him and the rest of Vantage the best of luck.
